ICELAND - Vik to Hofn

After staying in a bubble overnight in Reykholt on Day 1 we started our journey around Iceland, with our next stop being Vik. We stayed at Hotel Katla which is located just outside of Vik. We spent many hours around 9pm watching the puffins at Reynisfjara Beach. What an amazing sunset and incredible time with all these small beautiful puffins and seagulls.

It is so amazing how many changing landscapes we passed during our short drive. We drove through majestic lava fields, passed Glacial rivers, rugged landscapes, and towering mountains - all in one day. I have tried to capture the most interesting aspects along the way. Apart from the changing landscapes, I became fascinated with the amount of sheep grazing in the fields and along the side of the roads. Apparently there are more sheep in Iceland than people. What amazed me the most, is that everywhere in Iceland you will see groups of three sheep.

As we were driving along one stretch of road, we saw an interesting rock formation on the side of the road. This definitely necessitated a stop. The place is known as Laufskalavrd, and legend has it, that if you place a rock on top of the other rock formation, you would be granted luck.

Our first planned stop for the day was Fjadrargljufur Canyon. This was magnificent and the walk to the top enabled you to see for miles and witness the extent of the canyon.

The next stop was Fjallsarlon Glacier. We didn't take the tourist walk to the glacier, but preferred to explore the icebergs further away from the glacier, which were located in the lagoon to the right of the Glacier.

We then stopped at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where we found many seals floating and playing around the icebergs. Across from the Glacier Lagoons, you find a black sandy beach where the icebergs float out to sea.

Some of the countryside on our way to Vik.

These three sheep were fascinated with us. As I said always in a group of three.

The clouds hang low over Iceland and provide the most amazing scenery shots.

We encountered miles of scenery like this - black dirt/rock with green patches of vegetation.

Place a rock on top of one of the other rock formations and you will be granted luck - Laufskalavrd.

A totally different landscape to what we had seen anywhere before.

I can only describe it as soft, green, mushy and very interesting to see.

The bottom of Fjadrargljufur Canyon - notice the brown mud waterfall. Strange as the water didn't have any tint of the colour of mud.

This picture and the one below - views from the top of Fjadrargljufur Canyon.

I had to include this one, as I managed to capture the rainbow effect from the sun on the rocks.

Just one of the many changing landscapes we passed.

To areas of absolute barren landscapes.

To areas of rocky beaches and glistening water.

And then back to barren black silty rock landscapes.

Fjallsarlon Glacier.

The icebergs which are located to the side of Fjallsarlon Glacier.

The following pictures are from Glacier Lagoon.

And a seal frolicking around the icebergs.

Black sandy beach and the icebergs floating out to sea.

Couldn't resist photographing these lovely sculptures we pulled from the water.

About Me

I'm an avid traveller based on the Gold Coast, Australia.  I love my photography.  My other passions involve outdoor activities, including snowboarding, surfing and  wakeboarding.  You'll find me riding every morning, swimming as much as I can and loving late night walks with my pups along the beach front.  Wildlife and nature amaze me and my favourite time is spent in the wilderness.
