ICELAND - Hof to Mývatn via Egilsstaðir

We were heading east to Egilsstaðir and our next accommodation at Hotel Eyvindará. Believe me, I cannot pronounce any of the names and places in Iceland and when I do, the locals find it so amusing.

The ever changing landscapes of Iceland are amazing. You experience towering cliffs, jagged peaks, lush greens and volcanic rock. All of this shared with passing through tiny villages with quaint houses.

Our main aim for this part of the journey was to visit Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls.

In Egilsstaðir we hiked to the top of the mountain. This is a fairly steep uphill climb, but at the top you are confronted with stunning views of the whole valley.

Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland - I have read Dettifoss is suppose to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. We spent our time on the east bank of the waterfall. To get to the east bank you need to drive for about half an hour on a very bumpy and windy gravel road. I wanted to try my ND filters and slow shutter speeds, so have included a couple of photos using these. I'm personally not sure I like this effect, but that could also be that I used too long exposures.

We then walked to Selfoss waterfall along the east bank. Selfoss is a beautiful waterfall in the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in North Iceland. We spend most of the day at these two waterfalls.

A not so tiny beach we found on the drive to Egilsstaðir.

From lovely beaches to rocky landscapes.

We found this canyon on our drive and I had to stop and run across the bridge (risking life and limb) to get this shot.

The magnitude of Dettifoss is too hard to describe. The whole day was superb.

Selfoss waterfall. Not as forceful as Dettifoss but still magnificent.
